Rethinking Psychiatry Is Moving

Goodbye and thank you to Unite Oregon.

Hello to Montavilla United Methodist Church for future Rethinking Psychiatry meetings!

With mixed emotions, Rethinking Psychiatry is saying goodbye to Unite Oregon as our meeting space. We have been holding our monthly events at Unite Oregon for several years, and they have been a wonderful partner. However, because Unite Oregon is expanding their important work with refugees and immigrants, they are no longer able to host outside group events, for the time being. (For more information about the great things Unite Oregon is doing, please visit their website at www.uniteoregon.org.)

Our new meeting space will be at Montavilla United Methodist Church at 232 SE 80th Avenue in Portland. Rethinking Psychiatry is not affiliated with any religious group, though, and everyone is still welcome at our events.

We chose Montavilla United Methodist Church for many reasons, including:

  • It is beautiful, spacious and ADA-accessible.
  • They are enthusiastic about our work, and have invited Rethinking Psychiatry to be long-term community partners, offering the space for free!
  • They are a community partner of Folk Time, another organization we fully support and which is supportive of us. (For more information, visit www.folktime.org.)
  • It is 5 minutes off both I-84 and I-205 with free, plentiful parking (near the Academy Theater).
  • It is easily accessible by public transportation via bus lines 15, 20, 72, and 272, and just a mile from the max.

We know this location is further for some of our long-time members, and we hope you will still be able to join us. Space for events is hard to find in Portland and generally very expensive. We explored many options, and believe this will help us grow as an organization and in outreach.

We look forward to seeing you for our next event about Open Dialogue, a way of working with people with psychosis and other mental health crises, from Finland. It will be on Wednesday, November 7, at our new location at the Montavilla United Methodist Church, 232 SE 80th Street, Portland, OR 97215, between Burnside and Stark Streets.

Hope to see you there!
